Wavy Gravy
# 134
Counter-culture icon Wavy Gravy at his 65th birthday celebration held at the Berkeley Community Theater on May 15, 2001.
Wavy Gravy is a revered Berkeley character. Locally he is known for the circus and performing-arts institution Camp Winnarainbow. Nationally he is known for constant fundraising for Seva Foundation, an international health foundation dedicated to ending preventable blindness and other projects. He is always fun, always a clown, always using laughter to inspire social activism.
His Hog Farm collective is alive and well in North Berkeley. It first came to national attention as security, “the Please Force,” at the original Woodstock festival. Since that time Wavy has been an active cultural (“under-the-counter culture”) force. To honor his “ascension into geezerhood,” the city declared May 15th Wavy Gravy Day.
