A researcher contemplates the view from the plaza just outside the entrance of the Advanced Light Source. The structure behind him is the fourth floor of Building 2, which contains material science labs. Even the stodgiest scientific literature refers to the Berkeley hills setting of Lawrence Berkeley Lab as “romantic” and “beautiful.” In the background are Richmond, Brooks Island, San Francisco Bay and Mount Tamalpais.
