Stadium
# 35T
California Memorial Stadium (1923) is cut into Charter Hill at the head of Strawberry Canyon. It is a Roman Coliseum combined with an elliptical earthen bowl. It was built over the Hayward Fault with expansion joints at the north and south ends to compensate for earth movement. The western side of the stadium is steadily creeping north at the rate of about a centimeter a year, creating prominent displacements. Massive retrofitting is needed.
The International House (1930) with its prominent nine-story dome is directly in front of the stadium at the head of Bancroft Way. The architecture is Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival. It was deeply controversial at the time of its opening. Many objected to a co-educational dormitory that included Americans, foreigners and people of color.
