Magnolia in February

# 2

Strolling under a deciduous magnolia in full bloom are a woman with baby carriage and a dog. Even though February is one of Berkeley’s coldest months and the middle of the rainy season, many plants are beginning to quicken and flower. By mid-February or earlier, the city is filled with flowers. On Lincoln Street ornamental plums planted by the Work Progress Administration are covered with clouds of pink blossoms. Magnolia cultivars, fruiting plums and acacia trees are in bloom. There are bearded irises, daffodils, flowering quince and narcissus. The small shrub Daphne odora broadcasts its intoxicating perfume.
