Joseph Charles

# 5

For 30 years Joseph Charles waved to the morning traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Way calling out, “Have a GOOD day.” He became a local and then a national and international legend. His irrepressible good humor warmed people’s hearts and gave generations of children lasting memories. After retiring in 1992, he received many honors from the city. The community mourned his passing at 92 in 2002. In his final years he could be briefly persuaded to resume his post. Motorists honked and waved as if he had never left.
